"Well everyone, here we are. A little over a month from now #GamerGate will have been a year old. A rotten situation born of greed, contempt and a great deal of hubris.
We had been pronounced dead, declared terrorists and supposedly undesirable to even partake in our beloved hobby of gaming. The media, both our would be close friends in gaming and the greater world at large turned their backs on us. Decried us as the worst of the worst, good for nothing, officially over and the all-around internet boogeyman that was too extreme for 4chan. We have suffered through many internal struggles as we dealt with growing pains. Many old faces now gone from our side, turned away by frustration, despair, or disgust.
And yet here we are still standing. Still alive. Us the 'wailing hyper-consumers, the 'childish internet-arguers-, and the 'obtuse shitslingers' whom no longer need to be their audience. And you know what? They were right.
After nearly a year digging, researching, debating and some magnificent
shitposting we have done far more than complain about a problem as our detractors are so fond of doing- we have begun creating. We now have new and growing gaming websites, several of which have been with us from the start carrying on the ideals of ethical coverage and free speech. We have among us now so very talented people looking to break their own way into gaming. Some have a bit of experience and others, myself included, are entirely new to the scene yet eager to build upon the ground that has been fought for. For this here I want to personally thank you. And then there are the many generous donations and fundraising we have backed totally over $140,000 last I heard several months ago! Efforts that have gone towards helping to build a new indie gaming scene. Efforts that will actually help women get into the gaming scene. And efforts that have gone towards legal issues where in free expression and injustice has been found.
All of this and so much more. We have laid the foundation for better gaming and you can take pride in knowing that. With issues ranging from ethics in games journalism, to free speech and creative freedom and liberty itself we have made a difference. I firmly believe this. Even those of you who have left the community and are no longer involved, you still helped make gaming a better hobby for everyone during your time involved. We all have, each of us have contributed in our own away. Some much more than others to which I believe we could never have made it this far without.
One day this ride might come to an end, there’s almost no telling at this point. I for one will always be pushing for the ideals of ethics and free speech as I have before and surely will after #GamerGate. What began as outrage over ethical journalism has dug into information making this so much more and we all know that gamers love going after that next challenge.
So with our one year anniversary fast approaching let us take this moment to remind everyone that #GamerGateLives, we are unbowed and just as determined to stick it out as the day this began!
