This week, we’ve got Jacques Tourneur’s ‘Night of the Demon’ from 1957 to discuss, while also revisiting the power of atmosphere and mood in horror. The film, which follows a skeptical psychologist as he tries to uncover the seemingly supernatural means behind his colleague’s death, has just as much intrigue and drama behind it as the story itself. Tourneur, a disciple of Val Lewton’s shadowy 1940s style, clashed with producer Hal E. Chester on everything from pacing to style to wind machines, but most importantly was their debate on whether or not to show the demon monster.
