"It’s a little bittersweet around the boiler room this week, as the Phantom Erik and Lester Reaper wave an official goodbye to the horror greats of the Golden Age in 1956′s ‘The Black Sleep’. In this film, Basil Rathbone is cast in a familiar mad scientist role as he tries to experiment with the human brain using any means necessary. Also cast in the film as Rathbone’s unfortunate patients are Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr. and John Carradine. For most of these men, the 1950s were not kind; yet they all shine here in this effective thriller before exiting into the dark night to make way for a new generation of horror masters.
