"The censorship board is kicking us out of the house for a little while to go play abroad. And today, we’re punching our passports in China as we take a look at our 1937 film, ‘Ye Ban Ge Sheng’, known back here in the States as ‘A Song at Midnight’. During a tour of Universal’s “The Phantom of the Opera” overseas, young filmmaker Ma-Xu Weibang became inspired by the tale of true love torn apart by prejudice and fate. He took the tale to his war-torn country of China and infused it with themes of patriotism, turning his life work into a masterpiece of early Chinese cinema. The Phantom Erik and Lester Reaper have fun with this Gaston Leroux’s story, which inspired your host’s interest in horror as well as his name, as they celebrate a quarter century in the books!"
