17th Annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival and CthulhuCon Keeps Portland Weird

Portland, OR --The 17th annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival® (HPLFF) and CthulhuCon will take over the screens of the newly renovated, historic Hollywood Theatre at 4122 NE Sandy Blvd, the weekend of May 11-13th. Sponsored in part by Dark Horse Comics, this frighteningly entertaining event celebrates film and literature influenced by the master of cosmic horror, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, with three nights and two days of horror, fantasy, and science fiction.

The HPLFF was featured in an article by Claire Evans on IFC.com, “Portland: The Science Fiction Capital of America?” “For lovers of the more macabre end of the spectrum, Portland’s Hollywood Theater plays host yearly to the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival and Cthulu Con, an event as amazingly improbable—how can there even be enough H.P. Lovecraft-inspired short films to populate a festival that grows yearly?” To find the answer to that question, we invite you to come see for yourself!

We are proud to announce that we will showing the Portland debut of “It’s In The Blood.” Written and directed by Scooter Downey, starring Lance Henriksen, Sean Elliot, and Rose Sirna, this indie feature weaves a father and son story of guilt and loss with bone-chilling deep woods horror. One of the coolest movies we have seen in a while! Unconventional creature design, haunting dream imagery, a yearning for lost innocence, and the undisclosed mythology of a fearful secret world make this feature film right at home at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival.

We also have the privilege of showing never before seen footage of “The Evil Clergyman,” starring Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, and David Gale, courtesy of Full Moon Horror. That’s just a fraction of the over 20 hours of films, panels, readings, and entertainment lined up for the weekend.

New for this year, on Sunday afternoon, we will be showing entries for the “Lovecraft Under the Gun 72 Hour Film Project”, where teams have 72 hours to write, film, and edit a Lovecraftian short film. The audience and a panel of judges will decide the winner! (for more info, or to enter, please visit http://hplfilmfestival/lutg)

After the films each night, attendees will retire to Tony Starlight’s Supper Club and Lounge for the after party, and a chance to mingle with film makers, guests, and friends. There will be a special live performance on Friday night, with Mike Dalager of the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society performing selections from their jazz cd,“Live at Gilman House.”

This year’s guest line-up includes the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society’s founders, Sean Branney and Andrew Leman. Branney directed their latest film project, “The Whisperer in Darkness,” and will be presenting a look behind the scenes of this most recent masterpiece. Guests include editors Robert M. Price, Scott Allie, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Ross E. Lockhart, authors Edward Morris, Jeff Burk, Molly Tanzer, Scott Connors, Cody Goodfellow, E. Catherine Tobler, artists Lee Moyer, Mike Dubisch, Nick Gucker, designer Thomas Phinney, and filmmakers Eric Morgret, Andrew Jones, Jesse Blanchard, Scooter Downey, and many more.

"I look forward to the H.P. Lovecraft Festival all year," said Dark Horse Senior Managing Editor Scott Allie. "It's a great time for everyone who loves horror--the actually strange, scary stuff--to load up on hard-to-find film, fiction, comics, and other works of art. The Fest helps keep Portland weird."

Sigh Co. Graphics owners, Brian and Gwen Callahan have taken the reins from festival founder, Andrew Migliore. The Festival kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, May 11th, with films and director Q&As, plus there will be matinees and evening shows on both Saturday, May 12th and Sunday May 13th, in addition to panels, author readings, and entertainment.

Weekend passes are $50 single night passes for Friday are $15, Saturday $25, Sunday $25. For more information, and tickets, please visit www.hplfilmfestival.com
