"We said we’d never do it again, yet here we are, and with two foreign films at that! This week, we turn the dial to the decade of the 1960s, one known for bringing extreme gore and violence to mass audiences for the first time. And one of the first films attributed with this is the Japanese film, Jigoku, which at the time was undefinable until that country finally accepted that horror had dawned. Nobuo Nakagawa, working at Shintoho studios, was known for updating Japanese folk tales with modern, horrific scenes, and held nothing back with this unique take on Hell.
Following that, the Phantom and Lester swing over to Mexico for their second Spanish-inspired film in less than 10 years, also taking on an age-old tale from that country, that of La Llorona, the Weeping Woman. In this update, Mexican horror icon Abel Salazar moves quite a bit away from the traditional tale in order to open it up for modern audiences. Does it work, or will it fail? You’ll have to listen to the Phantom butcher his Spanish again to find out!"
